This is my favorite childhood book. I loved it then and I love it now. It's just beautifully illustrated and captures the mood of autumn perfectly. I thought I had lost my copy and I panicked. Did you know it’s out of print? A copy on Amazon sells for $112! I searched high and low and found my little book up in the attic. My favorite part:
BUT WAIT…what’s this? There’s a boy with a machine gun…fighting off aliens single-handedly…spraying bullets every which way! Possibly Mousekin's body guard? That fancy contraption on his head is throwing me off.
It's a never-seen-before illustration…a bonus section!
Do you think this last chapter of Mousekin’s little autumn adventure makes MY copy worth even more than $112?
I can’t believe otherwise…it’s one of kind!
(And now I think I remember why it was up in the attic, safe and sound?)
Reminds me of a boy from a family who wasn't allowed to have any toy guns - he was shooting me with a stick!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you found your book safe and sound. I've had some of those panic moments. :)
ReplyDeletei cannot stop laughing. my boys are looking at me like i have ten eye balls or something. this is priceless!
ReplyDeleteI'm searching for this book at every USED book store...thanks for the post...how do you get your pic banner so long?? I know you use Picasa, but mine come out shorter than yours...
ReplyDeleteI got such a great laugh out of this, I'm beaming. We are not alone :)
ReplyDeleteClassic! Too funny. :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! As you just showed, the unexpected "chapters" just make the story sweeter.
ReplyDeletep.s. I still have my copy of "Blueberries for Sal".
We checked this book out of the library last week because it was one of my childhood faves. Little did I realize how valuable the book has become! I'm surprised the library has been able to keep it on the shelves.
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome!
ReplyDeleteLooks like many of the books in my house.
Our copy of How The Grinch Stole Christmas has the Grinch colored in green on every page. "Mom, they forgot to put the color in this book!"
Love it!
I love bringing out books that I have enjoyed as a child to my children. I have had to give the speech to a couple kids in this house that a book has survived for 35 years and all of a sudden the faces are colored in with black pen! I have learned to keep the special books in a secret place only to be read with me present. P.S. I love the new header. I didn't have a chance to vote, but that was my favorite choice!
ReplyDeletelaughing hard... so good!
ReplyDeletethat is PRICELESS! yes your book is worth more... extra special it is!
my jaw dropped when i saw your new banner... LOVE it... REALLY great!
The additional illustration is absolutely a bonus! So cute. Looks like a great book and I'm glad you found your copy.
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteI,too, love Mousekin. I love Mousekin in the Autumn, and also on Christmas Eve (there is another wonderful Edna Miller Mousekin book, Mousekin's Christmas Eve). I retired recently after teaching for 36 years. Whether I was teaching kindergartners or fifth-graders, my students were always treated to Edna Miller's books. One year, I brought our big jack-o-lantern into class and let it stay until it changed into a very cozy home as well! As the mom of two boys, I laughed along with everyone at the unique addition atnthe end. Thanks for the post! Kathy
We read this book - it's in our "October" book box (nerdy, I know). I had no idea it was worth so much!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh...so funny :)
ReplyDeleteNice book!
ReplyDeleteIt is so attractive, funny and easy to understand. I will surely pick this one as soon as possible for my child. I hope he will really enjoy it. Thank you so much for informing us about Mousekin's Golden House.
Thanks! That was my favorite book in Kindegarten. I'm so glad you showed pages!! I still doodle Jack-o-lanterns constantly because of that book.
ReplyDeleteFound you by googling "Mousekin's Golden House" - a favorite of my four children - aged 42 down to 9! Yikes, I loved mothering and staying home raising my first three kids, that I did it again (with help from science and a lot of prayer) at age 60! Still at it, loving every moment, and this time home schooling as well (we are in rural Belize).
ReplyDeleteOur copy of Mousekin turned up years later after I believed I had lost the library copy we checked out and of course I paid for it. Realize now that they were probably not able to secure another copy at the prices I too see on Amazon and elsewhere. But we would never part with ours! I am going to direct some young mothers I know to your blog. Keep up keeping up.
