Isaac

I started off writing about all the things I love about this birthday boy, and then erased it, because I thought I could sum it up all in one story.

Two weeks ago, on Friday night, the documentary Babies came out to a theatre close by.  I was so excited to see it.  I would go alone if I had too.  I asked, "Anyone want to come with me?"  Isaac said, "I'll go!"  Really I said?  "Yeah, I want to go!"  Abbey of course wanted to see it too.

We rushed to get there...I have this thing about sitting in the second row in the middle and I just have to have those seats.   From the credit card machine in front, I bought the tickets and popcorn.  (And yes, I had my purse stuffed with waters and candy from the gas station...I am not paying $4.75 for a tiny box of Milk Duds.)  I asked Isaac if he could wait in line for the popcorn.

I notice so many people milling about..tons of teenagers.  I tell Isaac where our theatre is, and he waits in the concession line.

He finds us, popcorn in hand, in an empty theatre.  Bursts out laughing and calls out, "Mom, where are you?" in a scary kid voice like he can't find me.   He sits down and says to me, "I just saw tons of kids I know out there!  They are all going to the opening night of Iron Man II."   I said, "And you are going to the documentary Babies with your mother and your little sister. I'm sorry!", thinking I totally embarrassed him.  He says, "Yeah, I don't care."

And truly, honestly he didn't.  He sat there and watched the whole thing with us.

That incident says everything about Isaac that I could possibly tell you.

Love you Isaac and Happy Let's Pretend It's Not 16th Birthday!

  1. Best boy teenager story EVAH.

Also - I have been scouring the web for showings of Babies and it's no where to be found in the state of Indiana. What gives? And was it as good as it looks?

  2. What a great post. I'm two years past this with Tucker, and there is just something about man/sons. It is fantastic. It makes them growing up and leaving a little less painful.

  11. Gee Sarah,

I thought you were his SISTER not his mother. Snort snort. Don't you worry, you make 50 look FABULOUS! Seriously, the boy is something else. How was "Babies"? Never mind, I'm sure it's awesome.

  18. What a great story! That totally reminds me of my big brother. He's seven years older than I am, but of my six siblings is the closest in age to me. Growing up, he was one of my best friends. He let me tag along with him to everything....even when his friends were along. He's now the father of four boys, and is the best uncle. Congratulations on raising such a terrific teenager.

  20. That's awesome! You are such an amazing mother if I were him I'd want to sit with you too! I love how you sum it up, that says a lot and it also says a lot about how great of a parent you are for him to choose to be with you instead of his friends, especially as a teen. You must be so proud! What a handsome fellow Isaac is, I hope he has the most wonderful birthday and all of your family enjoys his special day! :-)

  24. What a beautiful story. I would be so proud if my kids have that much confidence when they are 16. It's something I think about a lot. How DO you teach confidence or are some kids just born with it? Hmmmm...guess I'll have to keep thinking about it.

  38. I just realized what it is about these pictures that are so great--even the ones that were taken with those old film cameras and had nothing fancy about them.

You got down to his level! There are no shots of you towering above the baby while he's looking up, up, up at you. Very nice!
