Here are my favorites:
I was thrilled to find A Child's Year at a little used book shop for .50 cents. I love Joan Anglund...I remember my mom having her calendars when I was young.
Abbey bought this one for me at an antique store in our little town.
My most favorite of all, Little Mommy. I had a copy when I was little and wore it out. When I found a new copy years later I could remember every little detail of every page, I had studied them so hard when I was a little girl.
Funny how this looked like my bedroom for awhile in real life. (But put the baby IN my bed.)
Yup :)
ReplyDeleteWe have all of those and many, many more. LOVE Little Golden books and scour antique stores for them. And I think the fact that you and I both had Little Mommy as girls explains some of the things we have in common now!
WOW! A thousand memories just flooded my head right now..... sigh.
ReplyDeleteSomeone just gave us "A Child's Year"
ReplyDeleteI'll have to look for a child's life. I didn't have that one and now you gave me the wants. :)
ReplyDeleteI love little golden books. The kids inherited several of mine and I picked up several reissues when the boy was little. Man are new editions expensive!
Oh, I love them too! Love. Them.
ReplyDeleteI loved those books! My favorite was (and still is) "Charlie's Be Kind Day."
ReplyDeleteMy little girl LOVES Little Mommy- it is her hands down favorite!
ReplyDeleteI remember the Little Golden Book "We Help Daddy." It shows how two little children help their Dad do all his chores one Saturday. My kids loved it, but it set up such expectations in me for MY husband to be the same kind of Dad, that finally I had to hide it away.
ReplyDeleteMy husband hates chore lists and being reminded about things around the house he needs to do, and he didn't like people "helping" him either.
I think I'd like "Little Mommy!"
Now that the last child is in college and the others are all married...
My favorite Golden book was "The Tiny Tawny Kitten", also loved "A Child's Garden of Verses" and "The Wonderful School". Do you remember those? :)
ReplyDeleteI still have my Little Mommy book. I love it!! There is an illustrator of Little Golden Books...Eloise Wilkin and I collect her books!
ReplyDeleteStill have my original copy of "Little Mommy" from the 60's! Definitely a classic!!
ReplyDeletemy favorite was The New Baby. :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Golden book is 'The Happy Farmer'. My kids adored this book and laughed every time we read it!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites is/was "Where's Goldie". :-)
ReplyDeleteMy mother-in-law saved all of my husband's books (and his sister's) from when they were kids. There were well over 50 Little Golden Books in there. It was pretty awesome. Some we've had to get rid of as they were totally falling apart, still many others are missing their back covers. Most of the old ones have the plastic lining on the front peeling off, but the kids love them.
ReplyDeleteI think it's interesting to see how content has changed, and the use of specific words, through the years.
I started a collection for my daughter when she was born. Our favorites are The Color Kittens (1949), Chipmunk's ABC (1963) and The Bunny Book (1955). I hope she'll pass them down to her children as well.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! Little Mommy was my favorite one too - I had the entire book memorized! I still have mine, though it is a little worn :)
ReplyDeleteI have a Vintage Little Golden Book Collection, but I have never, ever seen that one by Joan Walsh Anglund...so I think that is a TERRIFIC find for you! I treasure these books, and like you, I studied EVERY detail in the pictures. I will pass on the Little Goldens that are Disney, or of cartoon character stories, they don't hold the same sway with me, I can leave them no problem. My favorite finds are from yard sales for ten cents or a quarter. I have been known to buy ten or more dollars worth at a time when they're priced that way! Yours are adorable and I'm now getting grandchildren and cannot wait to share them with yet another generation.
ReplyDeleteXOXO
Joni
I love Little Mommy too. I was sure the little girl was me. We had the same hair. My daughter also love the same books.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness... I just looked this up on Amazon and found the Daddies book which made me look more and I saw Nurse Nancy, a book that was my mother's when she was a little girl and I had to order it right away. Thank you so MUCH for this post!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove these. My daughter and I have a vintage Golden Book collection and even saw an exhibit celebrating their 65th anniversary a few years back.
ReplyDeleteStarted grabbing up Golden Books before we had children! My favorite was The Pokey Little Puppy. I remember as a kid going to the back cover and looking at all the different titles and crossing off (only in my mind or my mom would've shot me!) all the names of the books I'd read or really wanted to read. :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. I love Eloise Wilkin's book, Baby Dear. I would like to find it for my new granddaughter, Clara Rose. Her mother is my youngest daughter, Laura. I read Baby Dear to Laura's older sister, Jennifer, until she had parts memorized. I read a Golden Book about animal sounds to Laura when she was tiny. She would make the animal sounds herself. I would like to find that book also. Sweet memories and beautiful books.
ReplyDeleteBrings back memories from my childhood! So wonderful!
ReplyDeleteAnd I have a question for you (previous post): however, if you choose not to answer it I completely understand. I know lots of readers ask where you live. Obviously, you don't have to share your city, but perhaps just the state you live in (I have perused this blog relentlessly and cant find it!). I would love to know because it is so beautiful where you live. So different than our brown, flat, dry and hot Phoenix, AZ! When I "grow up" (haha) I want to live some place beautiful like you do!
I too love Golden Books! My faves are Dr. Dan and Nurse Nancy. I had my Mom's copies when I was little but they were lost over the years. This year, my Mom found new copies of each and gave them to my children. They love them! I have never seen A Child's Year or Little Mommy but I will start looking for them now that I have found out about them! :)
ReplyDeleteI really think you and I are kindred spirits for so many reasons and "Little Mommy" is just another example. That was my favorite book when I was little and I remember studying each page and acting out the different parts. I had forgotten about it until now, so thank you for helping me remember! I now have to hunt down a copy for my girls!
ReplyDeleteAw I love Golden Books too. I don't have very many now as I did when my older kids were younger. My faves were the saggy baggy elephant and the pokey little puppy :)
ReplyDeleteIt is fun how just a look at the inside cover can bring back warm feelings of being read to. Sharon Kane's illustrations are so much like my favortie illustrator of all time - Eloise Wilkin
ReplyDeleteI have a golden book collection too. I love that you can get them so affordable at Half Price books. And all my boys love them... even my older boys!
ReplyDeleteI adore LGBs. My husband and I have a collection of every title from when they began in the '40's. This includes those with puzzles in the back, those with dust jackets, a bank to slip coins inside and uncut paper dolls! We have over 5000 in our collection. My dad used to read them to me when I was little. My favorite is The Twins illustrated by my favorite LGB illustrator , Eloise Wilkin. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI love the Golden books too! My favs growing up were Tawny Scrawny Lion and Pokey Little Puppy...My daughter loves, Baby Dear and The Christmas Story, she loves the picture on the last page, and says look at Baby Jesus he's so cute...it's so adorable.
ReplyDeleteI loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooved those books too! So much so that I scoured use boo stores and antique shops to find my favorites!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I have all of those same books! Glad to know someone else collects them!
ReplyDelete~Courtenay
I still have my Golden books from when I was a little girl.
ReplyDeleteSarah! I've missed you :) I *love* Golden Books. My favs are illustrated by Eloise Wilkin like We Help Mommy, We Help Daddy, Baby Dear, My Goodnight Book. I'll have to keep my eyes open for Little Mommy~it looks so sweet!
ReplyDeleteI have a collection of these, not to collect, but to use for the kids. I find them at garage sales and can't resist.
ReplyDeleteBoth of my kids love Little Mommy. They ask to read it all of the time, even my almost 3 year old son.
ReplyDeleteWe Help Mommy. I can recount every detail of every page, and dreamed, DREAMED of having my own clothesline one day just like in the book.
ReplyDeleteAnything illustrated by Eloise Wilkin is my favorite though - I wanted a thousand babies who looked like hers.
3 down, 997 to go!
I have a collection of Golden Books and would like to sell them. If you are interested in what I have email me. I have some old ones and I also take care of books coming into a thrift store so I also have some old ones held back for selling.
ReplyDeleteMy email is on the blogger home page.
Love those books, too. Sheer nostalgia. I rediscovered them a couple of years ago, and read them to my children. I had forgotten about Little Mommy, amazingly enough.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is "The Happy Man and his Dump Truck".
Absolutely love Little Mommy it is my all time favorite book. I still have mine but both covers are gone. I would love to find a new one. We Help Daddy is great too. I also love the Rand McNally books. Too bad they don't reprint some of these classics.
