(She is pretending she is exhausted from her grocery shop trip.)
She has been grocery shopping for me because she enjoys it and I do not. I write out my lengthy list and hardly have to go over it with her, and she comes back with it all, plus some treats for herself. Like Santa ice cream treats and that sort of thing. She even bought Double Stuff Oreos for Isaac to take back to college because she knows he likes those. That's a thoughtful little sister.
Abbey also wrote a whole guest post for me this weekend, just to give me a little bloggy break, outlining some great affordable gifts of teen girls. I will post that soon. It is so sweet.
I love her and appreciate her so much.
I LOVE this post! I've got a helper like that too. She means the world to me. Isn't fun to see those glimpses of what wonderful women they will be?
ReplyDeleteI am blessed with a helper/daughter like that too. She's 27 now and a loving, ever caring, but not forgetting about herself young mother. I feel so blessed with that too..
ReplyDeleteWith my three sons it's quite another story :>)
Love from Holland,
Jeanneke.
Isn't wonderful when daughters are like that - both my girls were happy to do the grocery shopping it is such a help! What a good girl.
ReplyDeleteMy Hannah is the same. I don't know what I'd do with out her. Abby will make a wonderful mother someday. :)
ReplyDeleteYay for our Abbey's! My Abbey (with an E) is such a huge blessing- so proud of how she helps around the house!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gift!! I have a lovely daughter but she could learn quite a bit from yours - especially the thoughtfulness bit!! I am looking forward to her gift ideas as I am shopping this week and my teen girl is stumping me beyond the obvious clothes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweetie! I can't wait for her guest post!
ReplyDeleteWhat a blessing!! I'm so excited to have a daughter for this very reason. :)
ReplyDeleteHey, I recognize that sweatshirt as one you wrote about a while ago and I went out and bought!
ReplyDeleteI need an Abbey over here, will you share?
This post made me teary. You and Abby are so blessed to have each other. Truly! I am the oldest of 7. My youngest sibling is 20 years younger than me and she's now 17 and in her last year of highschool. We have a close relationship and she's almost more of a daughter to me then sister at times. Anyway... I was def my mama's helper too back in the day...I did countless hours of babysitting and errands. It wasn't always the most exciting and glamourous thing but it sure equipped me for the real world once I got married and our little son was born. Blessings to you both!
ReplyDeleteI have an Abbey, too. Her name is Jenny. She runs grocery shopping, target shopping, any errands I have that I don't like doing, she just offers. I am always amazed at her energy, after attending an early morning religion class, then school with ap and honors classes, then lacrosse and homework squeezed in, she manages to help me out and happily. I am soo grateful for all my children, especially the Jenny's that have graced my home. Good for you, abbey! Can't wait to read your teen blog post on gifts.
ReplyDeleteThat's so sweet and brings back memories of my teenage years. The minute I turned 16, my mom handed me the keys and a grocery list. She hated grocery shopping, and I loved the idea of taking the car anywhere, so it was a win-win situation. To this day, I absolutely LOVE grocery shopping. I guess when my sweet girl turns 16 (sooner than I care to think about), I will have to find some other errand for her to run. ;o)
ReplyDeleteThis is so precious.
ReplyDeleteAs a teenager I would grocery shop for my mom on occasion and never really understood why she was always so THRILLED when I did. I thought it was great fun. Wish I had a teenage daughter to send NOW. Can't imagine sending my teenage boys! No telling what they would come home with.
ReplyDeleteYou are one blessed mom!! What a helpful job for her to do for you!
ReplyDeleteThat gives me hope for my daughter! We are in a tough stage right now. She's 3 and I am lucky if she will bring her plate to the counter after her meal. Abbey sounds like one sweet girl!

ReplyDeleteI've never commented before, but have been reading your blog for quite awhile. I read this post and then looked over at my sweet baby girl - one week old today. She's my first and I am completely in love. I so hope I have the relationship with her you have with your Abbey. You are so blessed!
ReplyDeleteAWWWW Abbey! What a sweet girl. I use to do that stuff for my mom when I was old enough to drive. You would think my mom won the lottery when I would do it. It's kinda funny now that none of us kids live there anymore and she still buys so much stuff and makes dinner for 5 instead of 2 all the time. Needless to say, getting moms leftovers are the best. ;-)
ReplyDeletePS. Abbey, I am glad you buy special treats for yourself as well. You deserve it.
I did those things for my mom too. and I know she loved it. This is so sweet.
ReplyDeleteThat is so awesome. I can't wait to read Abby's guest post. my sister (14 years my junior) is a teen. Looking forward to getting some ideas!
ReplyDeleteI want one of her!
ReplyDeleteYou are so blessed to have such a thoughtful, lovely daughter. What a wonderful little family you have, and I love reading all about them!
ReplyDeleteLove this. My daughter is 2 and this gives me hope. I know that we will have some highly charged "moments" but I look forward to cultivating a good relationship with her. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is only six but I think she is an Abbey-in-training. You're a lucky mom!
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to have Abbey as one of your oldest! I have 3 boys before I got my girl. She will be just like Abbey I have a feeling as she already makes me "yists" (lists) of what we need to do and checks them off daily! I hope I can have the kind of relationship with her that you have with Abbey!
ReplyDeleteThis post was totally depressing to a mother of four boys. I swear, I'm joining the Peace Corps!
ReplyDeleteShe's such a good girl Sarah! I can tell just from reading your blog for the past 2 years. What would us Moms do without our wonderful girls?
ReplyDeleteI am always so impressed with that girl. She is going to go far in this world! Glad that you have such a good helper around! :)
ReplyDeleteSarah, I am wondering if you have any advice to me about how to encourage my teenage daughter (my oldest child) to be more pro-active in being helpful at home with the family?
ReplyDeleteShe is very self-centered (I understand this is a teenager-thing!) and rarely looks for opportunities to help...she just waits to be told to do something. She also has the attitude that she is the ONLY one doing anything and each request is such an ordeal. She really can be a lovely girl (although this comment isn't doing a good job of showing that) but I am concerned for her lack of empathy for her parents and siblings.
If you have any ideas for me, I would really appreciate it.
I'm so glad that your sweet daughter is helping you out so much! What a gem!
