My Girls

It's so much fun having daughters.
And I'm so happy these girls have each other, even if they are 16 years apart.
Somehow that makes it even more special.
I know Abbey will take Janey under her wing and be a good influence on her.
Not just morally but also with really important things like shopping for dresses for dances.
And at the same time, Abbey is learning all about how much work little babies are but how precious and cuddly and sweet also.  And how easy it is to get homework finished with one on your lap, pulling and crinkly the pages.
Abbey will be leaving for college in two years and I it makes me sad to think of how Janey will react. We will have to visit often and keep this little relationship strong. Meanwhile, I'll just cultivate as much bonding time as possible.

  3. Babies love homework. Fact! My daughter (now 10 months) comes running across the room for the chance to crinkle, sit, and drool on my homework. So far my professors don't mind. I think it is pretty amazing how children bond. My kids are 8 years apart and adore each other. Good luck with those girls! (and boys too!)

  5. Just want to encourage you that your girls can keep that bond strong:) I have two sisters, one 8 yrs younger, the other 20 yrs younger. In fact we just celebrated her 21st!! She was 9mths old at our wedding. Once she was old enough for overnight visits we had her stay regularly and always every school holidays, as our daughter and her are only 18mths apart, and then our other children are about 2ys apart she also grew up quite close to her nieces and nephews too

  8. My girls are 10.5 years apart and from the beginning they were very close. They are now 28 and 39 and they still have a fantastic relationship. They are from two different marriages, so that makes it even more special for me. My heart truly rejoices when I see the wonderful connection between them. One lives in NY and one lives in Hawaii, but when they get together, it's like they've never been apart. God is good.

  9. Precious.....so cute to see Janey sitting up and gravity pulling her chubby little face down - she looks so different (and older!) than when she's laying down....(profound statement, I know....) Thank goodness you have another gal in the family - it will save you many trips to the mall down the road!

  11. Hi,

I never had a sister when I was growing up and I always wanted one. When I had children I absolutely wanted my daugheter to have a siter. Yes, I did end up having more than one girl and they are just now at 26 and 21 starting to get close. My best friend had 3 sisters. Her oldest was 16 years older and her youngest was 5 years older. I loved all her sisters but she is by far the closest to the older sister. She always looked up to her for just the type of things you mentioned like shopping for dresses. When the older sister married my friend used to go and spend weekends with her and was the number one babysitter for her nephews. That 16 years may not work out to be any problem at all.

  13. My girls are 13 yrs apart with 5 boys in between them. I hope that they grow up close, too. I was kinda worried about the years between them but I think they will be close. I love your blog, thanks for taking the time to include all of us in your life!!!

  14. Oh, I love this! My sister and I are almost 15 years apart and she is and always has been my hero. Truthfully, I don't remember her living in the house before she went away to college - to me my fondest memories were waiting for what seemed like an eternity at the front door for our family car to pull up in the driveway signaling she was finally home on break. I would sleep in her room (in a sleeping bag on the floor) and she would tell me fairy tales until I fell asleep. She took me clothes shopping and bought me my first and only Barbie doll (my mother was anti-Barbie : )). Later in life, she helped me with boy trouble, girl questions that I was too embarrassed to ask my mother, and taught me so much about how to be a loving, doting mother when she had her children. I feel blessed beyond words to have an older sister and I know your girls feel the same way. Not everyone can say they have never (really, NEVER) had a fight with her sister!

  15. Love this picture!! My girls are just the opposite and are unnaturally close in age (8 months thanks to adoption). I agree that there's something very special with sisters... esp when they are a little different than the norm in age separation :)
PS- my husband is a teacher and our babies have been known to tear an occasional homework assignment as he grades. Luckily his students love my girls :)

  16. My oldest sister is 16 years older than I am. We are close friends (I am 41, she is well 16 years older than that :) she got married when I was 7 and I became an aunt at 8. Her kids are more like my siblings than nieces and nephews. I value her wisdom and advice so much as all her kids are grown and I am sti in the trenches. Abbey and janey will have a special relation ship!

  17. I am lucky also to have given my older daughter a little sister. The boys love her also.

Those girls of yours are precious.

  18. I didn't have a sister until I was twelve, when I got two. Now they're twelve themselves, and we have a great relationship (and one I can see just getting better as time goes on). I think there's something pretty special about being the much-older-sibling/second mom!

  19. Only one girl. She's our oldest and is very loving, protective, supportive and sweet with each of them. She really wanted a sister, but now she's married and has 2 sister inlaws and a daughter of her own.

  20. My oldest and youngest daughters are 16 years apart... they have an amazing bond. The youngest is 7 now, and she and her big sister skype and FaceTime often. It was actually harder on my oldest when she left for college and eventually moved out on her own, 2 1/2 hours away! Super sweet picture of your girls. :)

  21. My sister is sixteen years younger than I am and it has been such a blessing having her in my life. I feel like it has prepared me for having my own kids and while it is different than what many sisters share, I love our bond. She is 11 now and like the big sister to my three kids. I was so excited to hear you had a girl because of my personal experience and relationship. :)

  22. Sarah...my sister is 15 years older than me. She's my best friend. She's part friend part mother. I'm so close to her children who I babysat regularly. My eldest was truly like her first grandchild. I'd wait at the door for my sister to come home from college. I'd cry when she'd leave. I balled at her wedding when she left on her honeymoon (I was 8 and in 3rd grade). I became an aunt in 7th grade. We still do so many things together and have a great relationship. I'm sure your girls will be the same way...it's not the closeness in age...it's the closeness! Love this post (who am I kidding...love them all!)

  23. My sister is 17 years older than I am. She got married when I was 2. I am closer to her kids than I am to her.

  24. You know, in life there ate positives and negatives to everything. There are positives to having a big family and positives to having a small family. There are positives to having daughters and positives to having sons. There are positives to having children spaced far apart and positives to having them spaced close together. The point here is that there are ALWAYS positives to focus attention on. I think you do an excellent job of that, Sarah. Keep looking at the bright side and keep blogging because we all love your words of living! :)

  25. I got on here to leave an encouraging word but I see you already have lots! I have 4 older sisters ranging from 14 to 6 years older than me. The sister I'm closest to though was 12 when I was born. I was her living "doll" and we were always close. When she went off to collage I was 6 but I remember writing her lots of letters (mostly drawing pictures or making sticker scenes!) When my mom died at 12 she was my rock. She moved back to our home town and became a 2nd mother to me. To say I would be lost without her is an understatement. She moved to FL when I was 15 and now I'm back in MI. I HATE the distance, but it has not affected our relationship. We are closer than ever. Now, if I could just get her to move closer!:) Your girls are precious and I know they will have a very special bond!

  27. I was the same age when my little sister was born. I ADORED her and do still. I loved it. And it certainly did help with the baby fever! I was married 6 years before we had kids. :)
